Tai Chi was first established as a form of kung-fu (martial art) in China over thousands of years ago. It has been supported by recent scientific researches to have significant benefits on improving our health and wellbeing. It is simple to learn and teach Tai Chi, with different complexity levels and a wide range of application to choose from, Tai Chi instructors and students will never be bored.

The form of Tai Chi that we teach our clients is called the Tai Chi for Arthritis (TCA). Originally designed by Dr Paul Lam in Sydney around 1998; and within just a few years, qualified leaders and master trainers have set up TCA classes across the whole nation and overseas. The tai chi movements are slow and gentle with its focus on eye-hand coordination, relaxed breathing, weight shifting, body awareness and posture.

It was found this form of tai chi is particularly suitable to people with some joints or muscle pain, mild decreased in balance or mobility; and help to boost one’s self esteem and general fitness.

TCA is not just for people with arthritis; and its name does reflect its gentle nature that even people with ache and pain could benefit from the exercises. Certain movements in TCA have also been adopted in Pain Clinic, relaxation class, HACC workshop for home care workers, staff health day, balance training, and postural advice. Its scope of application will only be limited by our imagination.

Tai Chi is not the only type of exercises that may benefit you; you need to seek proper advice from a health professional that is skilled in prescribing exercises.

If you are planning to join a tai chi class or any exercise class, please contact one of our community health centres to organize a brief physiotherapy assessment. What separate your body and mind from a “Tai Chi” experience is just a phone call away.
